Sharing and Spreading Knowledge – Street Art Tour & Workshop with BRAINFART

BRAINFART did it again! 5-day street art workshop and tour for the Rapperswil Center for Vocational and Continuing Education. Nahuel, from BRAINFART, tells us what he experiences on such a day:

It’s 8 o’clock and I’m slowly getting ready for a long day full of street art! Just a quick coffee to warm up and wake up, put on good shoes and off we go towards Zurich Central Station. There I meet one of the 5 classes of the Center for Vocational and Continuing Education.

Our meeting point is at the big staircase, near the Europallee and about 20 young people and two teachers are there on time. The two teachers are dressed in an exemplary manner. Warm clothes and good shoes for the rather rainy weather. The young people have not quite grasped the information that we are going to be out for 2 hours today and have put on moderate to bad shoes and partly not so warm clothes. Oh well! In any case, I give a short welcome, introduce myself, explain what today’s plan is and off we go.

Our first spot is one of the most colorful murals in Zurich, namely the one by the artist Oibel. Here I tell them a lot about the creation of the work, as well as about the artist and his career. Further works such as those by C215, WES21, Kkade, Onur and Onetruth are on the program and I exchange ideas with the young people again and again. But I slowly but surely notice that the pace is getting slower. That’s why there’s a short coffee and pee break in between. As the last spot we visit the Wall of Fame at the Letten in Zurich. Here I explain the dos and don’ts of the legal walls and we look at the works that are currently on display.

Now it’s time for us to go to the Dynamo (the youth and cultural center of Zurich) and start the workshop. Of course there is another short round of introductions, I tell something about BRAINFART and myself, but quickly we take pen and paper and start with the first exercise. This is about stimulating the imagination and making the kids ready for the next exercises. But first there is a short lunch break.

At 1 pm we all meet again in the Dynamo, where we immediately start with the second exercise. I draw a typical BRAINFART character and the young people draw the character on a sticker blank. Once the sketch is ready, I briefly explain again how to work with the MOLOTOW ONE4ALL and Blackliner.

It doesn’t take long until the first works of art are created, but that’s not all, because they want to draw even more stickers. Which makes me very happy ☺ In between there is some information about the history of graffiti and street art, of course I tell more about stickers, the big brother paste-ups and stencils. At the end there is a small group work with some funny specifications from me and here, too, funny, colorful and fabulous sticker art is created.

The day has flown by again and lo and behold, it is 4 pm! Time to wrap up! I say goodbye to everyone, give them my contacts and the day is already over. A bit knocked out, but very satisfied with the workshop, I clean up the work tables and prepare everything for the next day. 1 day DONE, 4 to GO!
