Here are some images of a new TRAPPED IN ZONE ONE mural in Tower Hamlets at Wapping Woods, celebrating cultural diversity in the borough as part of Black History Month 2022.
“We named this mural ‘Planting Diversity’ to compliment the greenspace in Wapping Woods, depicting black heritage, referencing architectural elements found in Wapping and St. Katherine’s Dock and the inclusion of swans from Wapping Canal. Through a series of workshops at GreatArt and consultation in Wapping hosted by Tinuke Fagborun during Black History Month last year, we worked on a concept idea to celebrate black heritage in East London through plant life from the African and Caribbean continent. The mural design features plants such as the costus spectabilis from Nigeria, Rose mallow from Ghana, king protea from Somali with palm and plantain trees. The other aspect of our mural was to include colours and textiles patterns in the form of adinkra and kente from Ghana to give the mural an added cultural touch either side of the main design.”
The finished mural in Wapping Woods was painted by muralist Alex Cullen, assisted by Tinuke Fagborun and TIZO young co-producers from Wapping Tomzida and Touhida Sultana.
