COLOR OF THE WEEK: GOLDFISH

Todays COLOR OF THE WEEK is MOLOTOW ONE4ALL #241 GOLDFISH!

The color “goldfish” is not a specific color in the sense of a standardized color system like RAL or MOLOTOW. Rather, it describes a range of colors that are reminiscent of the typical colors of goldfish, i.e. orange, yellow, red, and sometimes also metallic shades.

The great variability of goldfish colors is due to centuries of breeding. Originally, carp were the ancestors of goldfish, and these have a rather inconspicuous coloration in gray-olive tones. However, through targeted selection, specimens with interesting color variations were repeatedly bred out. These were then mated with each other to further solidify the desired colors and achieve new nuances.

Today, there are goldfish in a huge variety of colors, from single-colored to multi-colored, with a metallic shimmer or patterns. The best-known colors are:

  • Orange: This is the most common and “natural” color of goldfish, as it is closest to the color of wild carp.
  • Red: Red goldfish are caused by the presence of red pigments such as erythrin and carotenoid.
  • Yellow: Yellow goldfish owe their color to xanthophylls, a group of pigments that also occur in plants.
  • White: White goldfish have a genetic mutation that prevents the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair color.
  • Black: Black goldfish have a high melanin content, which gives them their deep, rich color.
  • Metallic: Some goldfish have scales that have a metallic sheen. This is caused by the refraction of light on the scales.

In addition to these basic colors, there are also goldfish in combinations of these colors, e.g. red-white, black-white or orange-black. There are even goldfish with patterns, such as calico goldfish, which have spots in different colors.

The exact origin of the “goldfish color” cannot be traced back to a single event or a specific breeder. It was rather a long process of selection and mating that took place over centuries and involved many different people.

Today, the MOLOTOW “goldfish color” is a popular color tone for various applications, from interior design to canvas art. It is often associated with luck, prosperity and joy.
