In 2025, the city of Koblenz became the canvas for a remarkable urban art project titled “Across Generations,” led and curated by internationally renowned street artist Hendrik Beikirch. Rather than being a single artist’s work, the project brought together around a dozen local graffiti artists of different ages and backgrounds, each contributing their own style to a shared mural.
The result is a powerful visual dialogue that reflects both individuality and collaboration, embodying the idea of connecting generations through graffiti art. Located on a pillar of the Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke, the mural is fully integrated into public space, allowing passersby to witness the creative process as it unfolded and to engage with the finished work in their everyday environment. This openness is central to the project’s concept, shifting art away from traditional gallery settings and placing it directly into the urban landscape where it becomes accessible to everyone.
The artwork itself stretches across a large surface and combines a variety of visual languages, from classic graffiti elements rooted in early street culture to illustrative and comic-inspired motifs, as well as more painterly and realistic techniques often associated with Beikirch’s signature approach. Each artist’s contribution forms a distinct section, yet all parts come together as a cohesive composition that tells a broader story about exchange, learning, and coexistence. For Beikirch, who is originally from Koblenz and known worldwide for his monumental black-and-white portraits, the project also represents a meaningful return to his hometown and an opportunity to foster local creative networks. Beyond its visual impact, “Across Generations” functions as a social and cultural statement, demonstrating how urban art can bridge generational gaps, activate public spaces, and strengthen community engagement. It highlights the evolving role of street art as a tool for dialogue and connection, turning a simple bridge structure into a lasting symbol of collective creativity.
